Funeral home marketing: two plays, done properly.
Be findable at the moment of need, everywhere, always - and build the community connection that means families already know your name. We run both, at national scale, measured down to the phone call.
For a large share of families, the funeral home is the first call they make. It's often the first time they've ever had to arrange one, and they may be in shock - so they do what everyone does when they don't know what to do: they search.
That single fact shapes everything about marketing this sector. There are two plays, and they're different disciplines.
Play one: be there at the moment of need
At-need demand can't be created and shouldn't be chased - it just needs to be met. The job is total, constant visibility: map pack, local search, and paid coverage across every brand and every location, so that whenever a family in your area searches, they find you. For InvoCare that means keeping 20 brands visible at all times, structured so the portfolio never competes with itself.
And because the conversion here is a phone call, we measure to the call, not the click: search term through to call length and call sentiment. That data works hard. It kills keywords that ring the phone with nothing behind it. It helps the team handle calls better. And it spots inquiries that shouldn't be calls at all - we found a large share of calls were families asking for directions or livestream links, so we made both prominent on the site. Calls dropped, and the team got their time back for at-need families and the actual day job.
Play two: bring the community connection online
Funeral homes are some of the most genuinely community-connected businesses anywhere - sponsoring local organisations, showing up, being known. They've done it offline for generations. Our job on Facebook and Instagram is bringing that same connection online: making the sponsorships, the local involvement, and the doing-good visible to the community it serves, so future customers know the name long before they need it.
It works - paid social conversions rose 190% - and it's also where we helped Elliotts Funeral Services pivot during COVID, keeping the community connection alive on Facebook when gatherings couldn't happen.
What we don't do is run at-need tactics on social. Wrong channel, wrong moment, wrong tone.
Why us for this
Because we've learned the sector properly: the two plays and which is which, the call-level measurement, the multi-brand structure, and the judgement to test quietly and never ship anything a grieving family shouldn't see. The InvoCare engagement hit all three of its stated goals - community awareness and engagement, financial performance on or above budget, and a more unified team. Grant's words, not ours.
"We were impressed by Isaac's professionalism, empathy and the effort he went through in order to understand our business, our situation and come up with positive practical solutions. His solutions were practical, effective and enabled us to achieve all three of our stated goals."
Questions we get asked
What does 'measured down to the phone call' actually mean?
We track the journey from the search term someone typed through to the call it produced - including call length and call sentiment. That data cuts keywords that spend budget without producing real inquiries, helps the business drive better phone conversations, and shows which inquiry types could self-serve instead of calling. It's the same analytics discipline we run everywhere, applied to a sector where the conversion is almost always a call.
Does social media even work for funeral homes?
Not the way search does - at-need families aren't on Facebook looking for you, and running it that way is how the sector got its reputation for tone-deaf ads. What works is the community play: funeral homes are already deeply connected locally - sponsorships, local organisations, genuine presence. Social brings that offline connection online, where future customers quietly take note. Our client's own words after seeing it work: 'certainly changed my view.'
Can you run this across many locations or brands?
That's where we've done our biggest work: 20 InvoCare brands in New Zealand, managed as one portfolio, each brand accountable for its own numbers, structured so the brands never bid against each other - and cost per lead down 40% across all of them.
How do you handle preneed versus at-need?
As different campaigns entirely. At-need is immediate local search with zero tolerance for friction. Preneed is a considered decision that suits content, gentle retargeting, and conversion paths built for people planning ahead. Mixing the two wastes money and, worse, tone.
